This is my latest interview with Nienka Nina from Digital Nomads Daily - sharing my journey as a digital entrepreneur, shared my tips on how to become a digital nomad and when is the “perfect” time to take a leap!
how To Become A Digital Nomad and When Is The Right Time?
Video Summary 📝👇🏻 👉🏻
So tell us, who are you?
Adeline Er is a Digital Nomad from Sydney, Australia. She runs an Online Marketing Agency and became a digital nomad about a year ago. She also runs two websites NotSoBasic.Life and Travel Gig - an online resource for digital nomads and lifestyle entrepreneurs. Her purpose in her work and life is to inspire others to live life your own terms and to help people on that journey.
What places did you know or visited as a digital nomad?
Nomad Adeline loves working remote, and even though her Home base is still Sydney, she loved to combine her travels and her work. She has been mostly staying in Bali in her digital nomad lifestyle but also visited places like Hong Kong and China.
How do you make money as a digital nomad?
With her online marketing agency, she is focussing mostly on digital marketing, content creation and paid ads. She works with other digital nomads and remote workers and hires specialists, for example, Facebook Ads or Copywriting services. While Adeline is focusing on her clients, her team of location independence freelancers focus on the execution. She basically sub-contracts and this is how she’s able to build her creative team around the globe.
Adeline is keen to redefine the 9 to 5 work life. Adeline explains that it’s really important to find people to work with who have the same ideas about designing their life. She also has a piece of advice for aspiring digital nomads or freelancers:
‘Don’t work for free!!.”
She says that you need to ask yourself what you can get out of it, for example, can you learn something, does the person coaches you. Exposure is not a reason to collaborate because it won’t help you to your dream life or pay the bills unless it’s in the New York Times or Forbes Magazine.
Steps to kick start your digital nomad life
👉🏻 Getting more mindful about the things you want to do
👉🏻 Journal and listen to your heart what it’s telling you

👉🏻 Guilt vs Gratitude - These are two different things but many nomads like Adeline, go through some sort of pressure coming from guilt. This feeling can come from the idea that your parents have worked really hard to give you a certain life but even though you are thankful, you want to do things differently and pursue your passion.
👉🏻 Comparison - Adeline points out a very important point. The pressure that comes with social media it's really easy to compare your day 1 with someones day 562. It takes time to establish this lifestyle and to set up your business so make sure that you don’t fall into the trap that you will make $100K (or whatever crazy number).
Stuff you should think about
A piece of strong advice from Adeline and something that Samantha also mentioned in last weeks Digital Nomads Talks is: before you take the leap just get your finances in order. Adeline also has a digital nomad tip about how to become a digital nomad is to have a plan but approach it with an open mind. You need to understand where are the places where you can and want to work, this is especially important for entrepreneurs that want to run their business.
When is the perfect time to kickstart your digital nomad life?
There is no perfect time - there is always more money to earn and things to look out. Important is though that you just do it but again, be mindful about it and make some sort of plan.
What is your greatest failure?
Adeline basically wanted to do too many things at ones. She learned that if you spread your focus too thin nothing gets done. It’s something that we see with a lot of digital nomads, especially multi-passionate digital nomads who do creative work.
What is your most controversial thought about Digital Nomads?
Adeline sees that there is a negative connotation towards digital nomads and the laptop lifestyle. She explains that she is in charge of when she works and what moments of the days but that there is a lot of work that you need to put into it when it comes to managing this lifestyle.
