Banana pudding is a classic dessert that has been enjoyed by generations of families. This old-fashioned banana pudding recipe from scratch will take you back to the good old days of homemade cooking.

3/4 cup sugar

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 cups whole milk

3 large egg yolks

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 box of vanilla wafers

4 ripe bananas, sliced

In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk until mixture is smooth.

In a separate bowl, whisk egg yolks until smooth. Add a ladleful of the milk mixture to the egg yolks and whisk to combine. Repeat with another ladleful of milk mixture, whisking constantly. Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture and whisk to combine.

Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract.

In a 9x13 inch baking dish, layer vanilla wafers and sliced bananas. Pour half of the pudding mixture over the wafers and bananas. Repeat with another layer of vanilla wafers and sliced bananas, followed by the remaining pudding mixture.

Cover the dish with plastic wrap, pressing the plastic wrap onto the surface of the pudding to prevent a skin from forming. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Before serving, crush some vanilla wafers and sprinkle on top of the pudding.

This old-fashioned banana pudding recipe from scratch is sure to bring back memories of homemade cooking and family gatherings.
